That is completely dependent on whether you're doing a destructive or non-destructive test procedure.

Some 'non-destructive' examples are:
- magnetic film thickness gage (pull-off type, or magnetic induction)
- eddy current
- ultrasonic
- micrometer
- gravimetric

'Destructive' examples are:
- cut-and-measure (microscopically)
