Yes, either one will work, if you stop eating bad food and drinking pop. I was not "fat" but I toned up a lot by not eating pizza or fast food and not drinking pop and minimially exercising.

Apples and oranges.
Individuals vary, and so will effects of different exercise.
There are over a dozen types of yoga for example, all wildly diverse.
I happen to run a lot, and that works very well for me.
I don't expect my friends/clients to run exactly as much as I do.
"Toning up" is not necessarily a precise fitness/exercise term; it's like "looking better". So is "out of shape".
Have some specific-realistic goals for your results, like a certain bodyfat percentage, or inches off your waist/hips. And take notes of your progress. When you notice a certain way of exercising is working,
then that's the way for you.
When I fall out of shape, I take a little over two months to get back into long-distance running condition, and have a race in mind to participate in. So I like to think you have plenty of time to experiment with combinations of exercises over the following five or six months.
I do applaud that you have a goal date, i.e., the start of summer. In a few months, most good basic exercise plans actually pay off very well when done on a near-daily basis. Having a deadline makes it more urgent, and you treat it more importantly, like any appointment.

Pilates is better. It gives such a workout. Kinda hurts at first but really worth it. It will shape your body fast so yeah you can by summer if you do it atleast 4 times a week. Good Luck! :)

Pilates would help you tone up fast. Yoga would too but you have to be very agressive with your stances.

yes, yes, yes...pilates is great for toning and very easy on the back. combine this with power walking or a cardio work out and your body will become a powerhouse...no real equipment needed (the stretch bands for pilates and a mat) and good supportive walking shoes...no high price gyms and you still get a wonderful body...i love it
