I have chronic shoulder pain in my right shoulder, near the rotator cuff. Nothing is torn so no surgery is required, but there is constant low-grade pain whenever I put the least amount of stress on it. I recently started weight training, and am doing fairly heavy weights... This activity has neither helped nor worsened the condition so far, but the pain is starting to limit my progress in the gym. Should I consider cortisone shots?

my experience with shoulder pain was diagnosed as tendonitis. I got a cortizone shot, and have had no relief. but take that with a grain of salt! I had the shots in my neck for severe whiplash after a car accident and had great results...depends on whether or not the doctor is successful at "hitting the spot"....if your pain is low grade...I'd be tempted to lay off the weight lifting...allow the shoulder time to heal on it's own. Your probably doing more harm than good at this point. Try a visit to an orthopedic doctor. See what they have to say. I do know people that have had great results from cortizone shots in the shoulder. Good luck in your decision!

I can only tell you my experience. I partially tore my rotator cuff years ago. I went to an orthopedic dr. and was given those damn shots. (I've also had them in a bad ankle, too) Cortisone shots hurt like HELL. I won't lie. But they have helped for a while. The only thing is that you can only get 3. That's it. Don't let a doctor tell you you can have more. Run from them! More than 3 will destroy the entire shoulder socket.

Try one shot. You might get several months of relief from it.

I wish I had this 2 years ago when I damaged my rotator cuff while showing off. This is very detailed and really gives you the techniques you need to sort out your own shoulder issues and a lot more info such as preventing further injuries. If you have a shoulder keeping you awake at night you'll know it's no laughing matter.
