I am getting a 2001 Dodge Neon and It will be a 5 speed, but the only problem is I can't really drive 5 speed. I have a problem when I come to a complete stop and then I am about ready to go again and the car just stalls on me, what am I doing wrong?

SLOWLY ease on the clutch while gently pressing on the gas. Why did you get a manual when you can't drive it?

SOunds like you are popping the clutch. Try this

Go to a large parking lot after the store or office closes. Practice stopping the car and trying to start up again while no one is around to point and laugh (yeah... it happened to all of us at one time so welcome to the club).

here are the basics (you will have to fine tune them to your ability and car)

1) From a complete stop, step on the clutch with your left foot.

2) Put the car into first gear (make sure it IS first gear as second or third will just make it lurch and die)

3) Step on the gas... a little more then you need.

4) Slowly release the clutch. as the clutch plate begins to mesh with the engine the you will feel it in your feet as the car begins to move.

5) Try to balance the gas with the clutch without trying to move the car fast. (After all there is no one behind you and no pressure to go).

6) As you find the balance, give it more gas and ease out the clutch some more. keep repeating this and eventually the car will be rolling and the clutch will be all the way out.

7) Stop

8) Do it again...(and again)...soon it will become automatic (no pun intended) and you will be able to start up smoothly.

9) Once you can start, try shifting into second... and then back down into first

10) Got all this mastered... hit the road and let-em stare and point. You are past the worst part already.

..

The answers advising practicing coordinating the clutch and gas are right on.

Now, the reason you may be experiencing this difficulty is because the 2.0 Liter Neon engine (which they all have-except the SRT-4) has a relatively high rpm torque peak. This means that power is bad on start off, but good on the highway. I usually drive my SRT-4, but when I drive my wife's '02 R/T, I almost kill the engine everytime I start off until I reacclimate to this car's characteristics . So, you should rev the engine high enough to avoid stalling-and you will be fine!

The easiest thing that I have found to help is when you are stopped somewhere, slowly ease up on the clutch, whith the shifter in 1st of course, until you feel it grab. Hold it there until the light changes. Let off of the brake and ease into the gas. As you get up in speed, about 2-3 mph, you can let off of the clutch all together until you are ready to shift into second.

Whenever you get into an unfamiliar manual transmission car, the first thing you do is start the engine, engage the clutch, put it in gear, and SLOWLY let back on the clutch until you feel the friction point where the two plates begin to touch. Get past that point, and you're set. And yes, you need to keep your revs consistant. I like to keep it around 1000 RPM until it's fully engaged.

You're not finding the right mix of letting off the clutch and putting on the gas. If it stalls, you're not giving it enough gas while easing the clutch out. While you're learning to do this better it will be kinda hard on your clutch, but you're going to have to give it more gas than you really need, so it doesnt stall.
I suggest going to an empty parking lot to practice pulling out.

You're either coming off the clutch too quickly or not giving it enough gas.

As you get better at driving a stick, you'll know how far down you have to press to engage/release the clutch. Then when you get a green, you'll just know instinctively where to have your foot and how fast to release it.

America's failing we should all be taught drivers ed in standard shift, you have a whole string of good selections, the parking lot was where I got over my first trials with a manual. This is like trying to give instructions on riding a bicycle, one of those things you can do but difficult to describe.

99% of new drivers try to start the car moving while maintaining idle. Bring the revs up 500 or so above idle, then let the clutch slowly out. Try to maintain the same RPM as you let the clutch out.
