my kitten has just started cry and yelling before he goes into his litter box. AT first i thought he might have a bladder infection but he's not peeing anywhere but the box, and its cleaned daily...what could it be?? I did change his food recently.

Hi there...cats who yowl prior to going to the bathroom need to URGENTLY see a veterinarian if there has been NO evidence of urine found as this is a urethral blockage and this is very life-threatening. Cats can die within 24-48 hours.

Foods that are suddenly changed can cause severe bowel distresses such as diarhhoea and vomiting in cats especially in kittens as their digestive systems are very delicate. It's best to always gradually make the changes to their bowels can adjust to minimize the disturbances: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/pic/article.cfm?articleid=99

You may want to consult your vet. It is possible that he has a urinary tract infection-cats are especially susceptible to "growing" crystals in their urine. Crystals often result from high taurine levels in cat food. I recommend a high quality diet from the pet store or your vet. Avoid grocery and bargain store brands.

You mention he's still using the box-often that is the case with a urinary tract infection they will stop using the box-they associate the pain with the box. Make sure this isn't an infection so you won't have to deal with improper elimination.

Also if you have a covered box-take the lid off some cats hate them.

Take your kitty to the vet.It still may have a bladder infection cause this is not the right behavior for your cat. There are so many things that could be wrong you would not want your pet to suffer any more would you?It really sounds like a bladder or kidney infection to me.and if your cat does not drink enough it will get dehydrated and thats really not good.hope your kitty gets better.

Hairball medicine helps for hairballs, not constipation. He needs a medication called Lactulose. It's very cheap and helps. Get a new vet. I have had so many bad vets for my cat, almost cost him his life.

Here's a link on constipation:

He also could have a blockage: either urinary or colon. It could kill him. Get to a vet, and good luck!

I work in a Vet's office...so maybe I can help....

Is your cat straining to pee, is he licking his hind end, is he making many trips to the litter box?

If you answered yes to any of these your cat could be blocked. A blocked male cat is considered an emergency situation at our vet hospital .. he needs to be seen ASAP.

Play it safe and have your vet check the kitty out. We have a cat that suddenly developed a crystalization in his urine and the vet determined he needs a special diet. It wasn't very pleasant for him....but the diet cured him.

My kitten would do that. I was worried but he'd use his litterbox just fine. He had a good bill of health at the vet. I think he's just announcing that he has to go.

My kitten had the crystallizing urine thing, too - he was fine as soon as we cut fish out of his diet. I agree, take him to the vet, just in case. Good luck!
