I think there are technically two kinds - inattentive and hyperactive. Then of course, there is combined type. I believe they have officially dropped "ADD" and changed it to ADHD, regardless of the symptoms. Then following the ADHD is the type.
As for the person who ignorantly said it hardly even exists and if your kid meets one symptom of the criteria they are diagnosed....that is just utter nonsense. A child has to meet many symptoms. A child with ADHD is NOT doing typical child stuff, the behaviors are long term and more intense than anyone who hasn't experienced it can imagine. Untreated ADHD poses serious dangers in the long term.

Well ADD without hyperactivity certainly does exist. They tried to take it out of the DSM IV but they had to put it back in. It's more common in girls. They can be "good" kids who sit in the back of the room and daydream a lot. They often have low self-esteem. They have the inattentive and distractible symptoms. See the link below about women and ADHD.

The biggest symptom of ADD is ..not doing enough research. The more you learn and experience, the more you will find out what I have. ADD is VERY overrated and misunderstood. Ultimately, nonexistant. The mental health guides have a list of "symptoms" and if your kid has one or more, which all kids do, then they can be diagnosed as such.
