But a post mortem on an influenza patient in 1920 showed severe inflammation and swelling of meningeal tissues of the brain and spine, not common to influeza sufferers. Viral meningits or bacterial meningitis are diagnosed based on white cell count and patient history and both have been a formal diagnosis since 1920
