Cats do not have 9 lives. We are not sure where this myth originated, but it may have developed because of a cat’s keen abilities to expertly maneuver around static objects, move very quickly through their surroundings and balance well on seemingly precarious surfaces.

However, cats can be just as clumsy as humans and dogs. And much too often, another well-known saying, "Curiosity Killed the Cat," can sadly be true. Cats are very inquisitive creatures, and can get into plenty of trouble when exploring their surroundings.

It's just a figure of speech, cats are known to get really lucky when it comes to injureable situations. That's why people say cats have 9 lives.

I think really it's just a saying, but they do seem to recover from horrible injuries when it seems like they should have died, or survive situations where another animal or a human might have died. My cat has been badly injured twice in fights (he's now an indoor cat) but lived to tell the tale, so to speak.

My last one only had 4 - so don't let yours push his luck and depend on 9

Came home in our enginine as a kitten (used 1)
Got run over on the street was missing several days then we found him dehydrade and with a broken leg (life 2)
Got in a bad animal fight with possums infection - looked like a goner (life 3)
Got run over again - had to hide the body before the kids saw it (life 4 - that was all)

I guess my cat is an exception because he got hit by a car only once and died. He was laying on the edge of my driveway and a speeder hit him. so i'm guessing its a myth.

It is a myth that cats can be "killed" nine times. It is ONLY a myth. It has yet to be proven.
