I personally think The Beatles are WAY overvalued. However, if you grew up in that era you are more likely to think they are great. You tend to remember music from your growing up period more fondly than anything else. Ask people in their 60's what they think of The Beatles...

whoever thinks that the Beattles are overwalued you need to look around you and think that they are the ones who inspired so much music , the sounds, the new era. they are and always be classics to me! i mean i would rather listen to a John Lennon or Paul McCartney song rather than what you listed. just because some moron from the '70s says that the Beattles were great and not the same kind as them i think that tells you something: they are so right because the Beattles were so good and such a major influence and transition and they cannot do that or live up to the same ideals as the Beattles did. i think that both choices that you have listed say that the Beattles either did not influence them or that their kind of talent cannot last but hey, i guess that they are wrong since Paul McCartney has made beautiful music and it just proves that Jon Lord and Jimmy Page were wrong. As for you having pics taken with both of them does not impress me: if you had one with the remaining members of the Beattles that would impress me but i guess that you have no good taste in music and preffer Rock'n Roll rather than something classic! you are one of the few people who have the guts to say that BEattles are overvalued!bullshit is my answer!

It is easy to disregard what they did, and when you hear their music nowadays it doesn't sound anything special.
But at the time, they were a phenomenon. Not just a band, it was like the whole world had gone mad. I'm not sure it was even ABOUT music, really. It was all to do with long hair, the birth control pill, transistor radios etc.
You can not conceive of how revolutionary their music sounded at the time.
It's actually quite sad comparing the Zep, etc with the beatles becaue the beatles were more than just a band. There are plenty of bands that I enjoy a lot more than the beatles, too.
The beatles are all dying in reverse order, sadly. But in their day, they were a very big deal indeed.

No they are not. They changed society and the music biz forever. Before them, musicians recorded other peoples songs, written for them in Tin Pan Alley. An LP was seen as only a vehicle to consolidate a top 10 single, after the Fabs, an LP was a genuine artistic medium written by the musicians themselves. They pushed the musical envelope as far as they could by introducing a lot of recording techniques that were downright revolutionary, as well as using a lot of new musical ideas.

I was a teenager in the 60's.
The pop scene before 1962 was so boring, full of saccharine sweet ballads from the States, etc.
Then the Mersey Sound appeared and it was like a breath of fresh air. The Beatles were the best of them, you probably wouldn't understand how new and fresh they sounded to us.
OK, they went a bit too clever later on, but at the time they were the best. Even the USA was converted.
The media do overrate everything. But in the 60's the Beatles were the best and their music seems to have lasted the test of time.

Like them or not, The Beatles had more influence on music, fashion, lifestyle and played a bigger part in studio recording innovations than any other musical group in history. The effect was worldwide. They were even given MBE's from England for the prosperity the band brought an entire country. Almost 40 years after the band performed together for the last time... they still sell music.

You never give me your money
You only give me your funny paper
and in the middle of negotiations
you break down
I never give you my number
I only give you my situation
and in the middle of investigation
I break down
Out of college, money spent
See no future, pay no rent
All the money's gone, nowhere to go
Any jobber got the sack
Monday morning, turning back
Yellow lorry slow, nowhere to go
But oh, that magic feeling, nowhere to go
Oh, that magic feeling
Nowhere to go
One sweet dream
Pick up the bags and get in the limousine
Soon we'll be away from here
Step on the gas and wipe that tear away
One sweet dream came true today
Came true today
Came true today (yes it did)
One two three four five six seven,
All good children go to Heaven
"So go to heaven John, Paul, George and Ringo in your'e own time, but you'll never die as you were the best musical influence of this century"

When they first came out they were the greatest. But after the Rubber Soul album...they went down from there.
There will never be another band with such influence as the Beatles had!

Its a very nice cover-all answer isn't...
I think most people who truly like (rather than obsessive love) always have a 'i like the beatles but...'
my but would be that I didn't like their Rava Shanker period, the music was bad and certainly didn't stand the test of time.
The beatles will to me, be remembered for having one of the best song writing duos for writing good, catchy pop songs, but they are not gods.
Its very fair to say they came along at the right time with the right image and the right sound that a revolutionary generation wanted.
