hi,well first of all there are "dog years"each breed ages at a different rate, for example great danes have a life expectancy of a mire 7 years where as many mixed med size breeds can live anywhere from 10 to 18 years . med size dogs tend to be considered geriatric around 7-8and large breeds at approximately 3 .
if your not quite sure of the age there are thing you can check yourself to get a rough idea.check teeth if there are any missing (not just broken off)your dog has reached is "golden years"you may say .a great deal of tartar also indicates the god has a few years under his belt.cataracts ,blindness and deafness may indicate and older god not always due to some illnesses.fur on the front of the face becoming lighter or even white/gray.if your dog suffers from artherist.also if your dog is not as friendly ,rather be left alone .anyways i hope some of this helps .

Also, larger dogs "age" faster than smaller dogs. My vet told me that my 80 lbs dog would live only 8-10 years as opposed to a 25 lbs god living to be 15-16.

A good vet can tell you the age of your dog by checking it's teeth and health.

The teeth help identify age. Also dogs over 5 years tend to have a whitish hair fuzz around muzzle.

Usually you will notice it health wise and in its regualar routine. He may slow down, not be as exciteable, and you may "instinctively" feel it. Remember that a dog that is 10 is close to 80 in human years generally. If your dog is young and experiancing these symptoms, take her to the vet for a check up to make sure she isn't ill.

Watch how he gets up and down from sleeping, check for health problems that occur in the breed at old age and look at his teeth to see if major decay has occured due to age. Also hair color changes.
