How is the camera device inserted into the mouth when taking digital tooth XRAYS? Is it similar to a film XRAY where it will lay underneath the side of your tongue or do you just hold it in place on the side of your tooth and not under your tongue? Also, is the camera device flexible or is it hard due to electrical wires inside?

Thank you for all your help! I'm a bit worried about my appointment next week when they take my XRAYS. I never had digital before and I'm wondering about the comfort. If they're more comfortable than the old fashioned film XRAY...?

Don't worry about it. It is just like a regular X-ray you won't feel a thing.

The digital film is in hard plastic about the size of the old film only thicker. It's used the same way in your mouth, and the x ray is taken the same way. Some patients say they are a little more uncomfortable, but tolerable. The only difference is the wire attached to the film and a new handle for you to hold for anterior films in position. It eliminates the processing of the films which is time consuming, and enlarges them, which allows you to view what the doctor is discussing with you. Which in return enables you to be better informed in your dental care. Hope I've been of some help. Good luck and don't worry, you'll do fine!

Do you remember the "old school way?" Most digital equipment is very similar to what your use to. They still put an uncomfortable piece in you mouth, but in my experience it doesn't hurt as much. I have a small mouth, so I can really tell the difference. It still gags me though. When they take the x-ray for your front teeth, part of the piece does hit your salivary glands. Ouch. In my dental office the camera part of the machine is hard. If they do a panorex view, the unit just goes around your head while you bite on a small piece to keep you in place and so the Dentist can see both your upper and lower teeth with a slight gap.
