A great personality, a people lover, not being afraid to stand up for yourself are some good qualities to have. You can't be some ******** who doesn't like people but won't say anything to someone if they slap you on the @SS or call you a name! This is "bar"tending. People will get drunk and try to start problems, especially with the bartender and waitresses. You might want to keep control of your pervertedness and flirting as well. That's what usually gets bartenders in trouble the most!
The link below has a video when you first go to it. It shows you the "tom cruise'' stuff. It has links for schools, mixing drinks, and other good stuff.
The second link is pretty cool. It's got more to do with tossing the bottle in the air, and such.
The third link is pretty much the same, but it has mixing directions, new drinks, and a photo gallery.
Hope this helps!!

There are all kinds of bartenders out there. There are just beer slingers that work in small "hometown" bars, then there are night club bartenders. Night club bartenders are the ones that use "Flare" that is where you spin bottles and pour flare drinks. (check out the movie cocktail) you will see what I mean. If you want to become a bartender then go to school. They will teach you all you need to know. As far as how many drinks are out there well no number will go that high.

15 years of slinging drinks all over the place from Colorado to Spain! The best skills are being friendly and knowing your clients drinks! All the bottle flipping is all fine and dandy if you have only 1 person waiting for a drink but in a packed bar speed is the most important thing!!! Nobody wants to wait while you're throwing bottles around and building pyramids on the bar! Remember you make money by serving drinks not by being Tom Cruise in Cocktail! I know I will leave a bar if it takes to long to get a drink!

Special skills include a lot of organizational thinking. You have to have all your garnishes prepped, know how much is left of any liquor, wine, beer at any time so you don't run out, know where all your mixers are so you can just grab them, be able to remember faces, and above all remember hundreds of drinks. You have to be able to organize in your mind who got to the bar first, who's been waiting, etc.. And you have to have a flair for being able to schmooze anyone with a smile even if they're crabby. You have to have the attitude to politely ask drunks to leave or have them kicked out.
A friend of mine bartended at Applebees and she had to memorize a book of like 1000 drinks, and then was tested by the managers first by them ordering obscure drinks.

mixing drinks is secondary to being a good bartender. if you dont have good people skills and a knack for dealing with intoxicated people, then i would work on that first.

Go to your local book store and get the book " BARTENDERS GUIDE "
Also, there are MANY bar tending schools.
Most of these schools will help you to get a job also.
It also helps if you have a gift of gab.
