I just came from the eye doctor and found out that I need reading glasses. His exact words were, "You're starting to lose some of your close up vision." Before my appointment I had noticed some trouble when I'm on the computer and when reading the newspaper.

My question is, is this normal at my age? (I'm 41) I've always assumed reading glasses were something you didn't need until at least your 50s. I spend at least 6 or more hours a day on the computer. Could this be a contributing factor?

Also, does anyone know of any eye exercises that will help. I know improving my vision is a long shot, but is there anything that can slow the progression?

P.S. - I had laser surgery on my right eye about 10 years ago and in the other I wear a contact in my left eye.

Thanks for your help!

Presbyopia is not unusual at your age, a hardening of the lens. Nothing is going to stop it. If vanity is your problem go with contacts in both eyes. You only need them for reading now anyway.

You tend to start having trouble with close up vision when you hit 40 so you are just at that age when it happens. I am not sure why you thought it didn't happen until you are in your 50's but that is not true. Being on the computer a lot is not a contributing factor to close up vision as it is just a fact of life. There is nothing you can do to prevent it nor to fix it. I get the impression you are not happy about one more thing that says you are getting older but pick a snappy pair of reading glasses and get on with your life.

it is common for this to happen in your 40's
ask your doctor about glasses for people who spend a lot of time on the computer
there is nothing that can change this
it is part of the normal aging process
even people who have never worn glasses find at a certain age they need reading glasses

don,t do that again, not only for your eye. . You have to care your eye anyway. Before 2 year ago I spend 4 hours on the computer, I did not stay on my legs, it was completely numbed. Today is ok , but I have burning foot syndrome....always burning. Take care....
