Is Mel trying to tell us (great prophet that he is), that sacrifices DONT work, and that they are the hallmark of a degenerate civilization, and that we should not base a religion on the idea of human sacrifice?

Ahh - just in case you missed the point (Yanks not being overly insightful when it comes to theological matters), I include orthodox Pauline Christianity in this description.

I have not seen this film, and have no opinion about the movie whatsoever.

(I am also not an American, which is true of many here I suspect.)

I actually generally choose not to watch Mel Gibson films (unless they're the edited TV versions) because they're always super-gory blood baths (haven't seen "The Passion" either). I just don't stomach stuff like that very well.

And I just don't see the point of paying to see a film that I'll be closing my eyes to the whole time.

I was shocked by Apocalypto. Brilliant, and brutal I think he's made it as a legitimate great world movie maker. Mayan language? My take is he's declaring Western civ. is on the same path. It's clear the drunken wild man is stressed, but he did his job.
