If you are in the UK you need to go to University for 3 years and specialise in midwifery. Or do the 3 year degree course then specialise after that, which means you can practise anywhere in the world.
You need a certain amount of qualifications to go to University or you can do an access course at a local college.

It depends on what state you are in...every state has different laws regarding who can practice. There are three 'categories' of midwife. CNM, (Certified Nurse Midwife) CPM (Certified Professional Midwife) and Direct -entry midwife. In about half the states only a CNM can legally practice. and that is a registered nurse...who has taken an additional year at school in a midwifery program. A CPM doesnt have to be a nurse, just pass a gruelling series of tests and direct -entry is an apprenticed-based method. Many midwives are relegated to working in hospitals only, insurance is sky-high. Every midwife who practices home births legally must have a doctor as 'back-up' and doctors who will do this are hard to find.
There are not enough midwives in this country so GOOD LUCK!

There aren't enough midwives in the UK but unfortunately that doesn't mean the NHS is employing more! My sister looked at studying it, but the courses were massively over-subscribed and actually little prospect of a job at the end of it.
Sorry to be negative!
