DDS is just one of the two common degrees given in the USA. DDS and DMD are interchangeable and it just depends on what the school the dentist attended awards upon graduation. It translates into "Doctor of Dental Surgery," but this in no way indicates that a DDS would be on oral surgeon or better at surgery than a DMD, simply based on the degree.

I believe the BDS degree _IS_ a doctor-level degree in India, Gina, but Swe knows better than I do. It is like the LLB degree given here for lawyers. It translates into something like "Bachelor of Law and Letters," but it is the same in practice as a JD or "Doctor of Jurisprudence" degree.

if it is only a bachelor then you are not yet a doctor. A DDS is doctor of dental surgery and that is what you need to practice dentistry, or a DMD which is doctor of medical dentistry.
