Empathy is understanding an emotion in someone else because you have experienced that same situation. It's different from sympathy in that sympathy feels bad that YOU feel bad, without having had those experiences.

I have been reading a lot of misconceptions. It seems that sympathy is what you guys have been answering to.
Unlike empathy is the attunement of emotional orchestration two human feelings experience in the brain. It is is closely linked to emotional intelligence.

Empathy is when you feel sorry but have gone throught what the person had

Sympathyis when you feel sorry for someone but havnt gone through the same thing
