To make sure you are in fact spreading the truth...

Acts 17:11

Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.

So when you see my questions, don't get your feathers ruffled. Search the scriptures and answer with truth that you found, not something you heard from someone else.

I think there is a lack of serious bible study these days. Bible study is not for theologians, it is for everyone.

I am guilty of this too. That is why I started...

Agree or disagree?

Yes - you should question what you are taught anywhere.

Seek truth - Jesus said he is the truth, so we needent fear truth. Truth science and history can be use to clarify and correctly interpret scripture.

Although we will never get it all right seeking and searching (which involves questioning) is our responsibility and a path to fulfillment.

Best of luck with your seeking, I'm there with you. I try to limit my feather ruffeling at my church where many good sweet people believe you must have blind faith and a take the bible literally. They feel like you are attacking thier faith just by questioning details. I'm so glad to have found this forum and its thought provoking questions.

I agree that you should always check what anyone tells you about the Bible or God or even Jesus including your church. Jesus said that the road to life was narrow and few are the ones finding it. And, the Bible tells us that God will soon put it into the minds of the governments to destroy the false religions. We do not want to be left out of God's provision for life or destroyed with the false religions. It takes some effort to search the scriptures for yourself but it is very worth while.

You absolutely should question what you are taught, not everyone has your best interest at heart. There are the proverbial "wolves in sheep's clothing."

2 Timothy 2:15
"Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

Can I add asking God in earnest prayer if things are true or not to the scripture study?

Both are crucial part of gaining a personal testimony or conviction of the gospel. When I study, and ask God, and He tells my heart that something is true, then I know it for myself. I no longer have to rely on anybody else's testimony. And that is so important for my own spiritual growth.

So you're a "Christian," apparently, who advocates independent investigation of scripture.

That's a start.

I still can't help but believe that the average Christian isn't reading the same book I'm reading. How can any female (for example) be a Christian, given such remarks of "Paul" as are found in 1 Timothy 2:11-15, or Ephesians 5:23-24? How can decent people reconcile the bloodthirsty, genocidal monster of the Pentateuch with their (incorrect) notion of "gentle Jesus, meek and mild"?

I seriously don't understand it. Most "religious" people must simply be ignorant of their own sacred texts. But even worse are those who are (at least partially) aware of the problems of biblical exegesis, but attempt to evade the issues with incredibly disingenuous theological hoop-jumpings - see the doctrine of "Dispensations," for example. In my opinion, no God worthy of worship would require his devotees to make absolute imbeciles of themselves for the priviledge, as the demon of orthodox Christianity evidently does.

Unfortunately, too many of them DON'T question what they are taught nor what they read in the bible. Their heads are more dead than Gerry Garcia fans.
