At least you are willing to consider that this may possibly be the best thing for your beloved pet.

Your vet might be able to really answer this question better for you too. But I would say that if your dog appears to be in discomfort, regularly, that it may be time. I had a little shelter mix that I had to make this decision about a few years back. His kidneys had finally failed and he had been getting seizures as a result. The vet said they could flush the kidneys and he might live a few more months. I just didn't want him to suffer, just so I could have him around a little longer. So I made the choice to end his suffering. It's a hard decision to make, and I'm sorry you have reached a time when you have to consider this.

He will tell you. Is he suffering or in pain? Is he acting like it's all too much trouble? Or does he still get up in the morning pleased to see you and eager to start the day?
The fact that he has reached this impressive age is an indication of the good care and love you have provided for him. Let that love and concern help the two of you decide what is best for him. Remember that you are his whole world and he trusts you to do what is right for him.
If he is still wanting to be with you and interact, hang in there! It's worth all the effort you put into making a senior pet comfortable.
My four "fur kids" and I will be thinking good thoughts for the two of you.

it sounds like his quality of life is not very good. I know you love him but does HE love being the mess he is right now?
Animals gets depressed and their personalilty changes- has his changed to where he seems more lethargic about life? Thsi does not mean " does he move around " but does he seem to enjoy being near you- are his eyes sparkly when you get home- does he enjoy his bathes and scratches behind his ears or does he lay there and sadly look at you.
If he is sadly looking at you then I would say it is time to put him down and this is not a cruel thing but your final act of kindness to a loyal and loving friend.

I had to put a cat down once and it killed me even though I knew it was the right thing to do. SHe had seizures and the vet was optimistic about minimizing the seizures but nothing would make her quit having them altogether. She was miserable and by her actions she let me know.
I am so sorry you are in this position of having to make the choice. GOD BLESS

i owned a pitbull for 13 years ,best dog i ever owned .BUT, the time came for me to realize that he wasn't happy,he was going blind ,inconinent, covered in cancerous cysts, etc.I needed to accept that i was in denial and maybe selfish.i owed it to him to let him go.i stayed for the whole procedure.i miss him daily even after 4 years i compare the others to him,but i do not regret ending the pain.

I think that if your dog can no longer live a good life and is in pain and depressed, it is time to put him to sleep. It is creul to continue making him live if he no longer has a spark in his eye. You will know when it is time... he will tell you.

I think the right time would be when the dog is suffering more than he's enjoying life.

I'm sorry to hear your baby is in bad health.

How does he seem to feel? Does he seem like he's happy, or like he's in a lot of pain?
