It's just that, my cats mean the world to me but I don't have enough money to feed both me and my cats. Any nutritionists about? Thanks for your help!

It is fine for a cat to eat meat and fish. Cat food is nutritionally better for them though. I suggest you buy food for yourself and get some chicken or fish to share with them. Cats are hunters by nature and although this sound harsh they can find their own food. My cats have brought back food from neighbours bins. Rather annoyingly for me lol! I feed them all really well they still do it. I wouldn't keep an animal that I couldn't care for properly though. What if your cats became ill? How would you afford to have them treated to get them better. I apologise if this upsets you but it is my own opinion. As for eating cat food. It won't harm you. Even pet foods have human tasters! Not the line of work I'd go for mind you!!

A Pet Foods (UK) salesman informs me that in the UK all cat/dog food is made up from material fit for human consumption - so you won't get poisoned! And to test this point, I've just opened a can of Hi-Life 'Tuna Flakes' and tasted a small quantity. It's very moist and palatable - like tuna in fact! No wonder my cat likes it so much. [I'll let you know if I feel ill later!]

But there is no need to sacrifice yourself for your cats, or vice versa... You can buy good quality cat food in bulk quantities from any good pet store (dry food is perfectly all right these days and, since it does not 'go off' easily, there is almost no waste - just make sure water is available at all times). Places like Aldi and Lidl sell inexpensive approved cat food in cans, too, so you can give your cats variety. And if you have the occasional bit of salmon or tuna yourself (fresh or canned), share it with your feline friends (make sure there are no bones if fresh).

I do believe there are human foods that cost less than cat food.

A box of saltine crackers (soda crackers), a jar of peanut butter, and some jelly or jam is very low cost.

Also, Ramen Noodle products are very low cost (but the flavor packets are high in sodium).

In the US, many dollar stores stock various low-cost food items. It is possible to get a box of healty breakfast cereal for $2.50 or a can of beans for 50 cents. At a deli counter, some sliced meats are very low-cost such as balogna.

As for beverages, milk is worth every penny -- it has tremendous food value besides being thirst-quenching. Fruit juices as frozen concentrate are good value since for the same dollar you can get 4 or 5 times more product. Stay away from carbonated beverages and fancy bottled drink products which offer virtually ZERO food value and cost too much.

I know what it's all about to eat as low-cost as possible -- I have been living that way for years. It takes some resourcefulness to find markets that sell products at lower cost than others. Also look for special deals on food that are near their expiration dates. I regularly buy breads and meats that are reduced in price because of the sell-date. But they are perfect if you will eat them now.

I don't put much stock in manufacturer's coupons because that forces you to buy brand name products and it causes you to buy products that you might not otherwise purchase. Most non-branded generic or lesser-known brand foods are nearly the same quality as the well-known names. Obviously, only purchasing certain products when on sale price is smart, too. If you can match a store sale with a coupon, then you can sometimes get brand name products for less than generic branded items - so that makes them a good bargain, then.

Eating cheaply does not have to mean boring food, spoiled food, the same thing every day, nor eating pet foods.

Good Luck to you and your cats. I prefer dogs. I have said for years that my dogs eat better foods than I do. Sometimes the canned dog food looks and smells quite tasty (but I have never really eaten any).

You can get free pet food at most food banks. Cat food was not made for human consumption, and human food hasn't got all the nutrition in it that cats need. If you can't afford to feed your cats, you should not have them....it is unfair to them and irresponsible on your part.

Buy tuna and feed it to the cats and you can eat it as well Or chicken works too.. Or buy "cheap" on sale catfood.. it won't kill them, but it's better that YOU eat first, nutritional food.

(as for the others the library often offers free internet use)

cat food is usually the leftover bits from the slaughterhouse so it is best left to cats. same goes for dog food.
