Hello Americans. I've just read a question, written by someone English, talking about Brown Sauce. The US people didn't seem to know what it is.
Do you know what Brown Sauce is?

(Its a condiment like ketchup, which contains vinegar and spices and is used wherever ketchup can be used. It's not the height of gastronomic splendour, but very nice with a sausage)

KD, relax, I'm English and just wondering whether people know the stuff. I'm not trying to be smart. I'm just curious.

I'm an American and I have never heard of brown sauce. What you describe sounds much like our A-1 brand steak sauce. Or possibly Worchestershire Sauce. Generally we don't dip sausage in it though....Some people put A-1 on steak or mix it in with the ground beef when they are preparing burgers.

I'm located close to Cananda and I must say that I LOVE gravy on my fries....so going to Canadian fast food restaurants is such a treat! (not that the stuff looks like or tastes like real gravy, but whatever it is, it's darn good!)

I have heard of it. When I was overseas. I think it was in London and the first thing I looked at was the first different condiments on the table and there it was brown sauce. Yeah it is very vinegary. It is very similar to America Steak Sauce, like A1 Sauce. I have a question for you now. When I was in London they were eating beans next to their bacon, eggs, and toast. Why do they eat beans for breakfast? I was too embarrassed to ask. Thanks.

I answered that question, and the only type of brown sauce that I eat is brown gravy lol. I've never heard of brown sauce.

Seein how it has vinegar in it, it doens't sound to appealing to me. I think I might be allergic to vinegar, or my stomach just can't handle alot. Everytime I eat to much, or can taste it, I wind up throwing up, or stay sick to my stomach for a few days.

In French cooking a brown sauce is made with beef stock, flour, and butter. It is used to as a base for other sauces. Wine, herbs and other flavorings are added.

i know what it is. you don't have to be an English to know brown sauce. we have our own version of brown sauce in my home country, far too yummy than HP or any other sauces around and more gastronomically satisfying.

I do apoligize for our mannerless fellow Americans.
The answer could be gravy, hunters sauce or Steak sauce because it's usually brown in color.
We don't not call commonly anything "brown sauce"

We have no sauce that is widely known as "brown sauce". If you say that to us most likely we will say- "Oh, you mean gravey?" I bet its good though- as are many of the english treats!

It's steak sauce.

Hang on, are you American and you are asking what is brown sauce or are you British and you are asking Americans if they know what is brown sauce?
On the details, you have a close description to what the brown sauce actually is.
If you know the answer, why bother asking?
Or, is it a case of the imagined superiority that Brits, excuse me, Londoners, convince themselves they have over Americans so that leads them to ask questions that don't really have any cultural reference to the other country?
Hey, do you know, what are grits? Or, how about, "the neutral ground"? OR, pop bottles?
My point being, everywhere you go will have it's own learning curve for you. Travel more and get yourself out there with an open mind and you will find out the UK isn't the centre of the universe and there's a whole world of people who speak other languages and have no idea what is brown sauce.

Oh yeah, don't bother giving me a "best answer" in order to write a "smart" reply. I'll only be happy that I've accumulated more points and will ignore any negativity. Don't waste your time.
