It is my neighbors hound mix dog that has injured one of his ears. This was about a week or so ago and with the dog flopping his ears due to the injury the wound continues to remain open and bleeding. As it is not my dog I don't feel I should take him to a vet but would certinally try any other method to help the wound heal.

I agree with the previous respondant to report the issue to the proper authorities.

How ever, you can apply an antibiotic cream to the wound then some negasant powder. They both work together to close the wound thereby allowing for the healing process to happen.

Styptic powder stops small wounds, but if it has been bleeding for a week it may have involved one of the MANY blood vessels and veins in the dogs ear. The dog should definately see a vet. If the wound is not properly taken care of, the dog could end up with a blood borne infection (IF the cut involved a vein in the ear), which could infect his heart. This would kill the dog.
You need to make it clear to the animals owner that it is an owners responsibility to provide vet care as needed for the animal, of the animal control service or humane society could deem them an unfit owner and confiscate the animal.
Explain all this to the owner, and let them make a decision, but remember- no animal with an owner should have their medical needs ignored, because it is putting that animal at risk. You could always call the humane society for an intervention. OR if it is an issue of them nto being able to afford vet care, call the humane society or local vets and ask them what you can do to help the family afford the veterinary care. I know some vets around where I live often help out financially when low income families pets need care. Good luck, and don't let the poor dog suffer.

This is a tough question as the wound COULD NEED STITCHES!!

However is the wound on the inside of the ear or the outside?

If it is on the outside: Shave the hair around the wound. (BE CAREFUL OF THE WOUND!!!!!!) You can put a antibiotic cream on the wound and them use gauze and medical tape to cover the wound to keep it clean.

If it inside the ear: use an antibiotic cream on the wound, but depending on the location the gauze may not work. You can try to place a cotton-ball in there (gently and if the dog will leave it there). This will irritate the dog though and he might pull it out. You might have to use the cream and leave it open.

However, you are right you shouldn't take the dog to the vet unless you get their permission (and an agreement in writing as to who will pay the bill). You should try to convince to owner to take the dog to the vet. The ear could need stitches and/or could become infected it not taken care of properly.

This dog is lucky to have you for a neighbor, someone to look out for him! :) GOOD LUCK!!!!

You have to decide,, based on your relationship with your neighbor, how to proceed. If you don't think he will do anything, then don't ask him, just call animal control or ASPCA - IF HE CAN'T KNOW IT WAS YOU! An angry neighbor can be pretty bad.
If your neighbor seems nice, then he may be having money troubles or not know what to do. Washing the ear off and treating it with drugstore brand equivalen of Neosporin will probably work, if you (or he) will do it twice a day. Hard to know without seeing the wound-that's what vets are for.
Having said all that, my opinion is that anyone who can't, or won't take care of their injured pet should not have the pet. I'd call ASPCA (see their web site for number) and ask for advice.

Ears are very vascular-they have a lot of blood flow-if he is shaking his head a lot chances are he has an ear infection causing the shaking head and the bleeding ear is a secondary problem. You can use gauze pads and medical tape to tape the ear up over the top of his head, but you MUST be careful not to tape it too tight and the bandage should be changed daily. Your best bet is to bug your neighbor until he takes his dog to the Vet. DO NOT TREAT THE INFECTION WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT IT IS!! It could be anything from ear mites to bacterial infection!

A dogs ears are extremely sensitive and have many small vessels in them causing them to bleed easily. Dogs can easily bust these vessels just by flapping their ears which they will continue to do when their ears have a problem. The dog needs to be taken to a vet and the ear will probably need to be stitched or restitched whatever the case may be in order to get the bleeding to stop.

I know you can use a Styptic Stick or a powder called Blood Stop, but if this dog has been bleeding for a week he probably needs a stitch or two and antibiotics. I would call the Human Society. This is definitely considered animal neglect/abuse. I'm sure the dog's blood count is terribly low if it has been bleeding this long and that is dangerous. PLEASE help the poor dog by calling the authorities!!!!!!

If the wound is small enough...some syptic powder would help stop the bleeding (available at any pet store)...but the wound should be properly cleaned and bandaged to protect from infection and allow time to heal.

The dog needs to be properly cared for and the only way is to bring it to a vet.Your neighbor is being negligent and I would speak to him about it.Perhaps he does not think it is serious enough to warrant a vet visit.Tell him you think it is.If he does not do it,I would call the ASPCA.

I would talk to his owner that it is his responsibility to provide adquate medical cared to the animal. The animal has it's rights to get treated for medical problems. If there is such a law as animal cruelty in your state, mention it to him. Cause he could be fined for not treating the animal. Good luck. If all fails call animal control.
