It's been proposed as a way to get more people against the war.

There's no excuse for it. Modern warfare requires professionals, and the attitude and therefore deploy-ability of draftees is a very different, and no longer viable, way to make war. Didn't we prove that in Vietnam? You cannot win a war with people who do not want to be there, who resist their training and frag their officers, who hide out in drugs and alcohol to the extent possible.

Watch the movie "Platoon." The draftees' war. And yes, that was different circumstances, but the fact is they could not and did not win that war. It was handled badly from the start, or rather from the time it went from Green Berets (all volunteers) and training Vietnamese to bringing in our own draftees.

We have a great group of trained professionals. If they need to recruit more, do it the old-fashioned way: salary, benefits, and pride. The pride is real and justly earned. So are the salary and benefits.

They've been yapping about it in DC since early 2003. It's just a lot of hot air. The Nationals have a better chance of winning a World Series this year than a draft passing and being signed into law.

At this time there are no plans to reinstate but they are activating & testing the machine they use to pick the draftees, just to make sure it is working if /when they may need to use it.

Charlie Rangel, a Democrat proposed this. It's not going to happen, so don't worry about it.
