I personally prefer after market audio equipment. It tends to be more upgradeable, more compliant to standards and cheaper.

Many in car sound systems use bizarre connectors, dont support add ons (try connecting an ipod to a Ford sound system for example with an add on).

I bought a SatNav with a Ford Galaxy at a price of £1500. Its performance was absolutely dismal - its didnt have half the features of a £400 TomTom. Similarly in the same car I paid £2900 for the in car DVD system for the back - nowhere near as good as the Ripspeed DVD player at £799.

most original eqipment is junk. speaker cones are made of paper. the differnce would be like listening to a subwoofer from the 70s and compairing it to a sub made today. huge differnce.

Depends on the car, and it's age. but no matter what, you can always buy something better than what came in your car. It all depends on how happy you are with what's allready in the car, and what your expectations are.
