Just and idea, but for my moms 60th birthday I contacted all of her friends, my coworker, people I did not even know, strangers in walmart, and the guy at the coffee shop I visit everyday to call my mom at her office and wish her a happy birthday. She got calls all day long, and in the end I am sure there were at least "60" different people from all around the country that wished her a happy birthday. It didnt cost anything, but she still talks about getting all those calls!

When my dad's 50th rolled around I was 15. My dad and I are both into building and flying model airplanes. I had saved up my allowance and bought him this kit he had been looking at in the magazines. If I were to do it all over again...I would recreate one of his favorite models he built as a kid and give it to him ready to fly. My suggestion is to look at what he loves to do and go from there.

Two thoughts:
One of the things that I treasure is a hand drawn heart on a plain piece of paper with my little girl telling me she loved me. I keep that in a safe place. That probably won't do for you, but, yes something that shows him the emotional ties that you have with him.
On the other hand, from a practical stand point, you can't go wrong giving me a tool (even if I have one like it all ready, I can always use another). In fact that is the last gift I got ~ a table saw.
Oh, I am also one of the dozen or so father's in this country that like to get ties (especially, shall we say, distinctive ties).

For my fathers 50th birthday, I got him a 5 day cruise for two so that he and my mom could take a break for their kids and grandkids and focus on the two of them for a change. They both came back really relaxed and giddy as if they had went on a second honey moon. It was perfect!

I don't know if your dad cares about this but you could get him the fantasy nascar tickets where you get to go to the racetrack and drive an actual nascar. Or tickets to a game and you two go together, even if you don't like sports it would be fun. Or a cabin for the weekend for the family. You know parents enjoy times when there family is together.

He has probably got all the rubbish and gadgets that he will ever need, so it would be better to take him out for a meal, go somewhere special, or something like that.
It really is the thought that counts. You don't have to spend a lot on someone of that age!

That depends on his interests. My family gave me a surprise party. How they pulled it off I will never know! It was great though! We met at a restaurant so nobody had to do the work. We had about 30 old friends and family there. I don't remember what gifts I received, but I will always remember the party!

Knowing what he likes, like sports, hobbies, etc. Try going shopping and looking at things he likes. Make a list of all the things your dad enjoys and already has, this may help your greatly is making a decision.
