Just put him on a schedule and stick to it. If bedtime is as 8, then its at 8 every night. Start getting him ready at 7-730. brush teeth, read a book, change into pjs, and then put him down and let him go to sleep.
If he's not sleeping the night through, certainly dont get up and try to put him back down. Seeing you and interacting with you will only make him more awake and alert. Let him put himself back down as much as possible.
If it continues on that he's just not sleeping all night, switch his sleeping patterns during the day. He's obviously sleeping too close to bed time, or taking too many, or too long naps during the day.

I know from experience that this is not an easy time for you. The best way to get him to sleep at night is to reduce how much he sleeps during the day. It's easier said then done but after a few days of this he will be ready to sleep at night. Cut his nap time in half. Wake him and take him out for a walk, to play with a friend, to play in the yard, or anything you can do to keep him from sleeping. Do this for a few days and then cut the nap time down even more. After dinner, quiet down the house. Turn off the TV or play it softly, and be sure it's non-stimulating programming (like cartoons) a nature show would be good. Then before bedtime give him a warm bath but don't let him play too much. Keep him as calm as possible. Try using bubble bath with chamomile (available at the grocery stores) or if you can get some chamomile essential oil put a drop or two in his bath water.
It will make the day a little more complicated for you as you won't get much 'down time' while he's napping but once you're able to get some sleep at night you won't be as tired. Good luck!

Just that you can compare, cause i don't know your sons routine, my 22month old girl, gets up at 7am goes at 1pm for her 1 to 2 hour nap, and then it depends i try make her go to bed always at the same time, that would be regular 8.30-9.00pm, but sometimes her nap is later or longer then i let her stay up maybe an hour longer.Even if your child doesn't seem that he is tiered you need to make a routine.Kids in that age need to sleep 12hours in the night and need two time nap an hour or one time nap 2-3hours.But every child is so different. What you can do is later at the day, lets say 6pm you do go to a playground and let him play and run on the fresh air, best recipe fresh air. So he gets warned out. What we do is we go 3 times during the week, for an hour from 6-7pm to an indoor pool, she loves it and gets super tiered. I guess you just have to make sure that he makes over the day some activities so he is and the end of the day tiered.Sometimes if my little one just don't want to go to bed and she is crying and fusing and so on , i let her be up until she falls asleep standing, most of the time around 10pm.But routine is import and at that age, especially sleeping ritual.Giving a bath , brushing teeth , reading or singing, sometimes watching together at the end of the day sesame street, veggie tales or some kind of friendly child cartoon , helps out.
good luck , cause i know motherhood can be very hard sometimes
god bless

TRY TO KEEP HIM UP ALL DAY OR HAVE JUST ONE NAP AROUND 1 OR 2, THATS WHAT MY DAUGHTER DOES AND THEN SHES IN BED BETWEEN 9:30 & 10:00 AT NIGHT AND SLEEPS UNTIL ABOUT 9:30 THE NEXT MORNING. YOU'LL JUST HAVE TO GET HIM IN THE ROUTINE, THATS THE HARD PART, GOOD LUCK

You need a solid routine each night. Mine included a bath, where I let my daughter play for a little bit in the tub, then a snack, then reading her stories that she chose (up to 3), then tucked in and lights out. That was it. But it was exactly the same each night. She wasn't allowed to get out of bed except for the bathroom, which was rare. If she awoke from a dream, I was right there comforting her in her bed. She wasn't allowed to get up.
