because you need your sense of smell to taste.
I once saw an experiment with whiskey drinkers who did not like brandy and visa-versa.
They could not tell the difference when blindfolded and with pegs on their nose!

Okay, your toung is only capably of sensing five different sensations. All the variety of flavours we think we taste are actually sensed by smell. If you completely bung up your nose you will only be able to taste basic sweet, bitter, sour, salt, Umami (it's found in caviar and MSG). I saw a program where they tested a top class wine and tea taster, he insisted that it was his toung that did all the tasting and that his sense of smell was nothing special, when they tested him they found that he had less taste buds per mm than average but his nose was 2 times more sensative than most. He had no idea.

cause your sense of smell is affected (blocked nose etc), and that in turn affects your ability to taste. try to suck in some air through your nose while eating something, and you will be able to feel the difference in taste (or no taste, can i say).

your sense of taste is linked to your sense of smell. you will often find if you can not smell the food you can not taste it. so your blocked nose would effect your smell which in turn is effecting your taste
