To keep their food (fruits, vegetables, refridegerated medications etc) from freezing.

Because of this thing called "summer" - it happens in Alaska too. And they are called "Inuit" not "eskimo" - that word is out of date.

To keep things cool and fresh. Nobody wants frozen lettuce or even worse, frozen beer.
They don't need freezers though.
