My fiance and I are American, and I know the language barrier might be a problem, but it's just he and I going, and we want something very private (this is our 2nd marriage). I've heard Florence is the place to go. We thought about Rome, but isn't that overdone and not so clean? I heard the same of Venice, although I thought that would be romantic. Any suggestions on the most romantic city? Also, we thought about staying in a castle or a villa with sea views.

Thanks!

I would exclude Venice, mainly if you think to have the sea views. Venice is standing on the lagoon (with the water terribly smelling...!!!) rather far from the sea.Florence and Rome are even farer from the seaside and you can't get any seaview over there. If I were you I would go either to Portofino , Cinque Terre, Amalfi or Positano (provided your marriage is not scheduled in July/August otherwise you need to change the wedding's date being all above sites too crowded in the summertime).
You didn't quote which is yr religion, if you want (and you're allowed to) marry in the Church being yr 2nd marriage and other useful info to determine if it's possible or not for you to get married here. Italy is not Las Vegas where you can get the wedding license in nor 1 day.In Italy it takes more time and you need to arrange all the things rather in advance (but I'm sure you are aware of this).

I thought both Rome and Venice were just fine and quite romantic. (I just wish I had someone to be romantic with at the time! lol) Rick Steves on PBS does a show about Italy on the coast with small towns--Amalfi maybe? It shouldn't be hard to go to his website and find out. THOSE places are way romantic and I don't think it's very touristy.

Be aware that there's A LOT of red tape involved, especially from the Italians. (I had a friend who's daughter wanted to get married there--and her fiance's family already had a house.) Look into that and find out the time line before you start booking. Congratulations!
