I really don't know what to expect. Is it like on the show "Designer's Challenge" where I could interview each one, have them submit design boards and choose the best one, or is that just in tv land? Should I try to find a designer whose favorite style is the same as mine (transitional) or should I just find someone who has talent and know that they can work with whatever design they're given even if it's not their personal favorite?

All of that depends on how much you're willing to pay out, how professional you want the service, and the exact type of outcome you're looking for.
Whether you hire a professional, or an acquaintance, or a friend or relative, be sure that you KNOW that they will be versatile, that they will LISTEN to you and understand what you want/like, and that they don't get "pushy" with their unique style and make you feel like you "have" to do it a certain way.
You do need to trust the one you choose, though, completely, because sometimes they spring "strange" ideas on you that might sound perposterous, but really they would be beautiful when complete.

You can go to a Design Center in any state and speak with the manager there and then they can assign an interior decorator to you. Or, you can go to the yellow pages and call all the interior designers that you want and then get bids from them and see what kind of work they have done.

Always ask for a portfolio and check out references and maybe even give them a test room or project just to see how they do (not permanent, just practice). Make sure you have an agreement signed that if they end up hashing the whole project you'll be covered for it completely.

You can get the cheapest help through salespersons at furniture stores, hardware stores that have home decorating areas, paint and flooring stores, and especially, at decorating stores. Don't just trust anyone, of course, but don't turn your nose up at someone who may appear to not know anything because you could end up being very pleased with what they could do for you.

Good luck!

A good intertior designer is like a good hairdresser. They will work with you on what you like and dislike, but yet offer guidance to avoid the major mistakes...
You should try to find a designer that you feel comfortable working with. Someone with experience, and can show you a porfolio of completed projects. Shop around, and don't commit until you are 100% sure. An interior designer will be in your house and working with you on a truly personal level. Make sure you like them.

Part of the agreement home owners on the show have with the network show is that they look happy and follow through with their choices even if they don't really like it all that much. It's what makes the show, however many homeowners repaint and change furniture around later on at their own expense.
If I were you I would decide how you want your house to look and then get some friends over to help you put it together. Have a paint party!

And now for something different; why not try doing it yourself???!! you have a head on your shoulders...you know what you like...you know what colors you want to live with....go online or to the library,or just look at home magazines; create a 'dream file'; whenever you see something you like; a color, furniture, drapes, whatever it may be, and catches your eye, tear it out and start a file...soon you will have things that you love and want to have in your home and in your life....if you can't tear things out of magazines, jot down things you like and look in the stores, etc.. really, basically you need to know that light colors make things look large, darker shades make things look small, and remember to keep things in proportion to the size of the room!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know it's not all that easy, but it's somewhere to start!!!!!!....don't be shy, try it yourself......go to an art store and buy a color wheel; that way you can see what colors are complementary, etc...and work with that...guess I've loaded you down with lots of stuff, but at least it'll get you thinking...if, after all that, you still want to hire a decorator, go ahead, but think twice!! you may find that they can give you what you want, and then again you may have been better off doing it yourself!!!! good luck..email if you have any questions!!!!!!!!1

I would contact the interior decorators in my area. let them know you are considering hiring and would like to see some of their work. They should have references of people or places that you could see. then the one that catches your attention would be on for you to consider. just remember you will not see one that is exactly like you would want b/c our style is a personal one, that is what is so unique about decorating. good luck.
