It is possible to french braid your own hair. I have done it many times. I know some people who put a mirror on one wall and stand with their back to another mirror on an opposite wall so they can see what they are doing. Doing this has always made me mess up when I was trying to braid it.
I always just sit down and part off the center like you normally would and then start picking up pieces by the feel of it. It always looks good when I finish.
You must practice, practice, practice!

Yes its very possible. My mom is an expert at that..
as for me..my arms get tired and I end up with a crappy mess! I'll let the experts take it from there...although I know how to french braid..just not my own hair

Yes....I learned when I was about 12. When would have a family trip that lasted a few hours, I'd play with my hair. Got my motivation from an aunt who braided my hair, and when I was taking it out I payed close attention to the way it was. You just have to get into it and don't give up. It's a talent that takes time and persistence to learn.

I actually learnt how to french braid by trying it out on my own hair.
Separate out your starting three.
Hold the two outside strands in your palms and use your index and thumbs on your left hand to hold the middle strand.
Use your right index and thumb to grab the strand on the left.
Your left index and thumb pull the middle strand to the left as you are doing this.
Reposition the new left strand so it is in your left palm. As you do, grab some more hair. As you are grabbing, your right hand is helping by holding this new left strand.
Reach over with your left index and thumb to grab the strand on the far right.
Use your right index and thumb to pull the new middle strand over to the right.
Reposition the new right strand in your right palm after first grabbing some more hair to add to this strand.
Keep repeating til you get to the end of your hair.
There are also instructions and pictures online you might like to try:

I did it all the time.
Pull a section of hair up to the top of your head, just the top area. With your index finger, start at your temple and draw hair up to the secioned hair (3 pieces like a regular braid) add that section to the outer section of hair and twist into the middle, bring up other side, starting at the other temple , add to section, and twist to middle. Keep going back and forth from side to side.
