Take him out for lunch/dinner. Not only is it a nice gesture, and a pretty good present, but you're also giving him the gift of being able to spend time with you. It's an experience, not just "heres a present you might not use" Plus, everyone has to eat.

I'd try and find out from some older relatives what his interests are. Does he like movies? Get him a pack of Prepaid movie tickets from AAA. Does he like alcohol? What kind? Is it sports he is in to? What is his team? Can you maybe get him a mug or a jersey of his team?

How about a gift that would work for anyone? Say, a box of candy, or a nice coffee-table book.

Single malt whiskey every time. Even if he doesn't drink it he'll appreciate the gesture and beable to pass it on to someone who will appreciate it. Unless he's a reformed alcoholic and then that wouldn't be such a good idea.
