Hmmm... 2000 years ago during Jesus time, lots of people cohabit. Jesus even don't mind when he met a woman who cohabit with a man who is not her husband.

The problem is that today the definition of marriage has become so narrow that many people are not willing to be married under that definition.

Now if the definition of marriage is cohabitation, then a lot of people are married. It's more likely cohabitation is today's version of marriage

Marriage should be done the following way:

- Ask permission from the potential spouse and her guardian

- Discuss on how the marriage should be done (who gets what, how the children should be handled, and so on), including how it should be ended

- Agree on the agreements and swear to fulfill all of them

- Done

If marriage done that way, a lot more people are willing to be married.

In the 50's and 60's the norm for a woman was to meet a man, marry and have children, she stayed at home as the main carer and the father was seen as the worker, the provider.
The mother got the children ready and off to school, made all the meals, cleaned and was basically a all in 1 person at home.
In the 70's and 80's things started changing slightly, people were becoming promiscuous, having unprotected sex etc, women went out to work, were paid a wage for that work and got married later in life(where as you will probably find your grand parents were married at 18,your parents would have probably got married in their 20's).
Then came the 90's where more women than ever, work outside the home and more people are single,it was cool to be single, get a flat and have lots of single friends, both sexes.
Now we are in the 20's,more women dont want a family, people are more stressed than ever before, workaholics, fitness fanatics an basically dont have the time to meet some one.
Can you imagine how it will be in 30 years time.
I am 1 of those women who dont want a family, like my job and have a nice home, like to go on 2 holidays a year and enjoy my life.

I know lots of single people that go in and out of relationships never wanting to settle down. Its definately a sign that things are changing. Divorce is just a normal thing. People don't try anymore. They give up at the first sign of problems. People just need to work at it more.

I think that people are getting scared of marriage b/c of the divorces and many of the teens today are getting pregnant early so most of them are going to stay single. But if some of the people in the world still believed that they were supposed to stay with one person and only one there might be more people getting married

Life is full of choices. Marriage and Single? Some people need that to marriage, to share life with another person, since they can not live without someone. Others, seems to be able to handle their singleness. It is a personal choice to make. People have been married and single for thousands of years. I was single, divorced, single again. I have a happy whole person and I love people and have many friends.

i think people idealize love and marriage, making it out to be something that it's not. marriage is a lot of things, but it's not always a dreamboat. It's hard work and you have to make the commitment. Great singles probably realize this fact. They take it more seriously and don't want to tie the knot with the wrong person.

unfortunately i think you are right..people are not as willing as they were years ago to "stick it out" so they just part and do their own thing...I dont really believe its a question of independence but more of arrogance. People think its a sign of weakness to "change" for another human when actualy it is a sign of strength to do for others and still have your own identity. That being said people cohabitating is an easy remedy so people don't really have to change and when life gets to hard then can just walk away...its sad but probably ture...good question

I think today more people are career-focused and have some many more options for entertaining themselves that they're probably just pushing marrying/co-habitating further down the To-Do list.

I have had trouble finding quality people to date myself and I just refuse to settle. I'm a career woman so I'm okay with that and know when it comes it comes. I have enough going on that I'm not consumed with finding someone to marry. All this doesn't mean though that I won't when I find the right person.

I have always been single and have never met anyone even halfway decent. Living in Surrey does not help, they are all stupid, sexless and filled with hate, are only interested in money and status. Give me a West Country or Northern woman any day instead of these evil southern pigs.

I think it is a sign of the times, also many wait till later in life, so they can enjoy their youth. Also I think many are afraid to commit due to the large divorce rate and just happy living with someone, that way its not such a hassle if things dont work out.
