No, it's not "common" for women carrying biracial babies to gain more weight. Try and do some walking or other light exercise daily, then once you have the baby you'll all ready be in a routine and you can lose the weight easier. Best of luck on your little bundle of joy!

Every women gains different amounts of weight when pregnant. I always see these cute petite women carrying their babies and all you see is a little bump in the stomach area. Now, I am so different. I am 24 weeks and I have gained a bit over 40 lbs so far. I have four kids already and I always gain a ton of weight and luckily enough I have always been able to loose it all. I am 5'8 and pre pregnancy weight of 140-145lbs. and always get over 200 I had my daughter 2 years ago and the day I delivered I was 215lbs. and she was 6lbs15oz.. My problem is that I retain a ton of water and you can see it in my calves by pressing on them with my finger near my bone it will leave a deep indention. As long as your Dr. doesn't tell you that you are gaining to much weight and you are healthy then don't worry about it. As for Sickle cell anemia? Yes, it is only a disease that African Americans can get. I am not sure about Bi-racial babies though. You can ask your Dr. if there is a test that you can take to see if your baby is a carrier or if you have to wait til he/she is born. It doesn't affect every African American so the chances of your baby having it are slim. Does your boyfriend have it or anyone in his family? That is also needed info for you to know. Good luck to you and Congratulations.

I understand that you are "new to this" being pregnant and all but no offense, you are sounding very ignorant right now. Did you ever consider asking your doctor these question or did you know you would sound ignorant? The race of your baby has nothing to do with the weight you gain; it has to do with you - everyone carries differently. As far as health risk factors, that has to do with you and your boyfriend's genes. (oh and the words are sickle cell anemia)

Unless you and your boyfriend both carry the gene there is no chance of having a baby with sickle cell anemia. If you both carry the gene there is a 1 in 4 chance your baby will have it.

If your boyfriend HAS sickle cell anemia and you carry the gene for it the chances go up to 3 in 4.

If, however, your boyfriend has sickle cell and you do not carry the gene for it your baby will not have it.

[edit] Inheritance
Sickle cell conditions are inherited from parents in much the same way as blood type, hair color and texture, eye color and other physical traits. The types of hemoglobin a person makes in the red blood cells depend upon what hemoglobin genes the person inherits from his or her parents. Like most genes, hemoglobin genes are inherited in two sets, one from each parent.

[edit] Examples
If one parent has Sickle Cell Anemia ("rr" in the diagram above) and the other is Normal (RR), all of their children will have sickle cell trait (Rr).
If one parent has Sickle Cell Anemia (rr) and the other has Sickle Cell Trait (Rr), there is a 50% chance (or 1 out of 2) of a child having sickle cell disease (rr) and a 50% chance of a child having sickle cell trait (Rr).
When both parents have Sickle Cell Trait (Rr), they have a 25% chance (1 of 4) of a child having sickle cell disease (rr), as shown in the diagram above.
Sickle cell anemia is caused by a recessive allele. Two carrier parents have a one in four chance of having a child with the disease. The child will be homozygous recessive.

Your boyfriend is black. His mom, dad, siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. are more than likely also black. You have plethra of info available to you if you'd just ask somebody in your boyfriend's family.

Believe it or not, the last thing they want is for you to be ignorant of their culture and other things because you and your boyfriend are going to have to teach them to you child. And they don't want to be ignorant of yours either. You aren't going to believe the questions they are going to ask you, and they are going to be surprised at many of the questions you will ask them.

How to comb, style and cut your child's hair is going to be a big concern. You'd be suprised at the differences in philosophy when it comes to black hair and white hair, and how knowing both will help to keep your child's hair well kept.

There's food, and music, and religion and attitude. Just like when mixing any two different or dissimilar backgrounds. No different than if someone Japanese marries someone Jewish, or a Catholic marries a Muslim, or someone from St Louis marries someone from Idaho. Just alot to learn and become acustomed to on both sides.

But to your questions...no, black babies aren't generally heavier, but make sure you keep seeing your doctor to make sure you aren't experiencing diabetes due to your pregnancy. And yes you could just be eating too much.

Unless you have a someone in your ancestry that has sickle cell trait that has passed it on to you (highly unlikely) and unless your boyfriend already has sickle cell trait or sickle cell disease, there is about a 100% chance that your child will have nothing to worry about.

The internet is a wonderful resource. Use google search to read up on diseases common to african americans, interracial relationships, urban culture, etc. It's a great way to educate yourself and spend time. Also, spend some time at your local library and research some of your concerns. The walk will do you and your baby some good.

I hope my comments haven't been condescending. They weren't meant to be. I wish you all the best of luck. My ex-wife is the product of an interracial relationship and was adopted. We adopted my son who's birth parents are both products of interracial relationships. My son is technically, 50% black, 25% white and 25% mexican. That's an entire story in itself. So I understand your concerns. Trying to care for my son's hair was a mess at first. LOL

At any rate, good luck.

I am white and my husband is black, he is a sicle-cell carrier, they tested his blood,I notified my doctor and she did additional bloodwork on me, my daughter was fine! Just let your doctor know, also they will probably tell you about Rhogam- its a shot your doctor will give you so that your blood and your baby's blood will be compatable.
