I have a 2.5 year old male chihuahua and he's crazy. One second he's calm and relaxed and sleeping on your lap. As soon as you move, he growls and snaps at you. One minute he's licking your face, if you turn your head he bites your nose (as he did to my mother). My wife babied him from a puppy, so he is a big suck, but we've been trying really hard to be strict with him for the last year and a half. What can we do mellow out his bi-polarness?

I have a chihuahua myself. Unlike most others, mine is very calm and not at all tempermental. I do know that they like to be around those they are used too. They really aren't big fans of new people or people they don't see that often. This is just the way the breed is. My Grandmother's chihuahua, Baby, will snap at your hand if you try to touch her or my grandmother when she is near my grandmother. I think it just depends on how they were brought up. I took mine everywhere with me when he was a puppy. He got used to other dogs and people.
Also, if he is not "fixed" you may want to go ahead and do that. It normally calkms them down. Good luck!

Doing a Google search for "NILIF" (Nothing in Life is Free) will get you some help. This is a gentle, non-punishing way to teach your dog that there are consequences for his actions (good and bad)
Any good trainer will also tell you that a trip to the vet is essential to rule out that your dog is having any kind of discomfort, which will cause a dog to behave as you've described.
NILIF is not going to be welcome news for your wife. But hopefully she's understood (thanks to the biting) that things have to change. I would definitely say no more lap time for this dog - many times, dogs are not comfortable up on laps and when they feel threatened they will snap.

Thats the problem your wife babies him. He thinks he can do what he wants when he want. That is wrong he is a dog ; dogs have rules just like people do. You need to let him know that you are the pack leader. I would suggest you watching The dog whisper. Cesar Millan Understands dogs better then anyone. I have 2 min pin and they can be little terrors when they know they can get away with it. With me they don't but they will try it on my Husband and he pays the price for it. Don't give them an Inch they will take a Mile. I grew up with Chihuahua. They really are great dogs to have you just have to let them know you're the boss. You should do that with any dog though. Unlike people, dog are NOT bi-polar!!!!!!!!!!! He is just telling you that he is not happy with you disturbing him while he's sleeping or that he's not finished kissing you in a paticular spot. What you may have to do is go to training classes, but call and see if you can talk to the trainer and tell them what problems you're experiencing with you little boy and see what suggestions they have.
your only problem with this pooch is the he is SPOILED ROTTEN!

Little dogs have their own very distinct issues with being tiny and yes, bi-polar.

that is too funny ,set him some rules crate train him in other words if he acts mean give him a time out space and before you put him in the cage make him feel punished tell him no then in the cage he will get the picture my mom did that with her hot dog and it worked god she was mean shes cool now .
