If you accidentally opened someone else's mail but didn't read the contents would you own up? My mum did that today with my younger brothers bank statement and although she realised her mistake without reading the statment, I know that my brother is the kind of person who will be unforgiving of our mums mistake. So I've thrown it away and my mum and I will say nothing about it. I've broken the law by doing that, but I know what my brother is like, and he can always get a replacement statement anyway. What would you have done?

The thing with my brother is he's obsessed about money. He's financially greedy and it's not a good idea to interfere with anything connected to his dosh! Accidentally or otherwise. As for having his mail delivered to his own home, he still lives with his mum! He's 36 next month!!

Oh, and yes I did destroy the statement before binning it. Thanks for asking that important question.

I would have owned up because throwing away a bank statement is like an open invitation for identity theft. Besides that, it's illegal to throw away someone else's mail.

Going by what you wrote your mother did something that would be considered an accident and probably should sort the mail first without haste ...then open only hers. You threw it away? That's not an accident because you planned it. If I were you I would have stayed clear of it. If you thought your brother would be angry at mum isn't that between mum and brother?
I would rather have to own up to accidental opening of someone's mail then be the person who made a choice to throw a piece of mail in the garbage. Your trying to keep the peace could turn out to be a huge problem. Best to learn life does not ever mean a perfect environment.

I would personally own up. However, no offence meant but your brother does sound a bit on the strange side. With this in mind I think you have probably done the right thing. Karma - i.e. if your brother was more 'real' about money and post etc. he wouldn't have to be paying for another bank statement would he?

When I was younger and still living at home, I'd come home to find my mail (even personal stuff) almost always opened by my mother.
She never looked at the name on the front and just assumed if it came to her house, it was for her.
A bank statement is nothing. So what? Don't start a spiral of stupid secrets that really don't mean anything.
If your brother can't overlook this, then He's got problems.

First, your brother needs to grow up. Accidents happen and what your mother did was completely accidental. Yes he can get a new bank statement or he can see it online. If he is afraid that someone would see his statements and wants to keep it private, tell him to get online banking.
Second. Never throw someone else's mail in the garbage. Your reasons, even when understandable, are not legally correct. I would have given him the statement and told him what I told you in the first paragraph.

I would have owned up and said that I'd opened it by accident.
If your brother kicks off, then he cannot be that mature and if he is unforgiving of a simple mistake, perhaps your Mom should be telling him - at 33 FFS - to be leaving home and fending for himself anyway. I would have read the statement and dependant upon what I saw, put his rent up!

trowing away someone else's mail is far more illegal than opening it. You should have owned up, if he finds out that you through it away he can get you into real trouble as appose to before when he just would have been pissed off for a while, if longer then that's his issue. You broke the law by throwing it away, you made a mistake by opening it, I know what I'd rather know I'd done

Went to the bank and told them you have found this statement somewhere and that you think someone lost it, they would have probably send your brother another statement.
Or you could have said that you opened the post without looking at the name, I am sure he would have forgiven you. Is he that horrible a person that it is worth braking the law for him and then admitting it to everyone on yahoo but not your brother?
Good luck and I really hope it work out somehow.

I would just tell him like I hadn't done anything really wrong, but a small mistake. If he is so paranoid about his money, he should move out and have his own home where he can get his mail delivered.

I would have done the same thing! Especially, if your brother would not forgive for the mistake! And, he can get a free copy off the internet or from the bank! Do not worry about it...secret is with me!!! And, all of yahoo!!
