Clean it with Bleach, and rinse well. Algea grows when the PH level and the alkalinity level are perfect for growth.
Plan to clean out your Brita (including the filter holder) regularly to prevent this happening again.

I would try to clean it with bleach. As to what it is, I couldn't tell you, its probably some algae or some kind of bacteria. Maybe you need to change the filters more often. I know they are supposed to be changed after so many months, depending on the model you have, but you need to consider the chemicals that your city uses to "clean" your tap water. I've found that it was just cheaper to buy bottled water.

Are you talking about the jug itself? The best way would be to first try a mixture of 1/2 rubbing alcolhol and 1/2 water and scrub with a plastic scrubbie pad.
If that doesn't work, try 1 cup of bleach and 3 cups of water and the same scrub pad.
Either way, just make sure you clean it very very very well afterwards.

Ah, as we see, Chlorine is actually a "GOOD" thing, and a disinfectant . Your water filter removed the Antiseptic qualities of the Cl2, and now you have Colonies growing from light, and bacteria, so now you have to clean it with Bleach, which is "Chlorine" so you are adding what you wanted to remove in the first place, does'nt make much sense, DOES IT ?
