Ok I've made the mistake of laying with her to put her to sleep since she was born. She just turned 3 two weeks ago. How can I break her of this? She's on a pretty good schedule, usually asleep between 8:30 and 9:30 every night. I have tried slowly one step at a time leaving but it's just not working. Like, for the first week I laid on the floor beside her bed, the next week I'll lay in the middle of the room, and so on until I'm finally out of her room.. It's just not working, she thinks I'm playing a game and she wants to play too. She has a night light and is very comfortable sleeping in her room. She just wont go to sleep by herself.. What do I do?? Should I worry about this now or wait until she is just a little bit older? If I should wait then when is enough, enough? She'll be starting preschool this September and I want her to be broke of this before then..

Dont be so hard on yourself its an easy habbit to get into. So now how to break it, if you hadn't already tried it i would of said the move away slowly thing. I'd suggest sitting down and explaining that she's a big girl now so Mummy cant sleep in there with her as there's no room. Tell her she's gonna have a new bed time friend then take her to a toy shop (charity shop if moneys tight) and let her pick a new doll or soft toy for bed times. Then keep to a strict routine bath, bedtime story and bed. Explian that you'll just be outside and that she has to make sure her new bed time friend goes to sleep. If she cries go back in after a few minutes be firm and tell her its time for bed and put her back in her bed. Dont engage in conversation otherwise you'll be back to square one. Leave the room and leave her to cry for a minute longer then go back in and put her back in bed. You'll probably end up going in there 20 times, i've been there done that! But after a few nights of this controlled crying she will get herself off to sleep. Another option would be a reward chart if she stays in bed and goes to sleep she gets a sticker then after a week of stickers gets a present, just a thought. But i know from experience that the first option of controlled crying will work. Good luck, i'm sure you;ll have the little poppet sleeping soundly soon.

take her to bed two hours before you would go to sleep and this would solve the problem.
