I joined for several reasons, college money, patriotism, a chance to see different parts of the world, I always loved the military.
I got to go to airborne school and jump out of planes, I got to be stationed in Hawaii for 4 years (It was a tough Job but someone had to do it) , I got to see several countries in the Middle East, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, UAE, basically I got to do a lot of cool stuff I could have never done as a civilian.

The only draw back is the physical punishment on your body, I wound up with two compression fractures in my back and three disks with moderate bulges in them. I live in pain every day and am severely limited to what kind of physical activities I can do. For a guy who ran the Honolulu marathon in 94 that is a pretty hard adjustment.

Two reasons. One is that it an easy way to escape umemployment, particularly for young people with little or no qualifications. The second is that many young people are taken in by the advertisements of adventure and travel abroad with the glamour of being a soldier

As an Ex soldier, It's a misplaced bravado and need to prove ourselves to ourselves and others. I thought Vietnam was a just war....I now know it was wrong, just like this one. But a belief cannot be turned against if a young person listens to the wrong info. Good Luck to all our troops, be safe and come home soon.

When I joined the military, it was for the job experience, discipline, stability with a steady paycheck...although in those days pay was not very good. Yet, the benefits provided by the military certainly made up for the lower pay!!

couple of options there. either they grew up admiring GI Joes and being in the army gives them the feeling of being a badass gi joe. another would be for the patriotism side of it, but i think thats kinda diminishing nowadays. and the biggest reason i beleive is for either the free military education or the money for college.

I enlisted in the army at 17, because it is the right thing to do.

I frankly didn't have much else to do at the moment. I didn't want to end up living with my parents.
