I am assuming this is a spiritual thing. Fasting for weight loss is not a good thing, as you will only lose water weight, and will gain it right back if you resume your regular diet. A fast for spiritual reasons can be refreshing for the soul, though. I would suggest doing a search on Fasting at WebMD to get an idea of what your body will go through physically.
If you are looking to kick-start a diet, there are a number of reputable methods to try, including kicking the soda habit, passing up fast foods, and skipping dessert.

Dangerous idea.
Eat nourishing food with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables being part of it. Chew each morsel at least 32 times. This will activate signal to the brain as soon as u have had enough. Besides this change in eating style, take regular light exercises and brisk walks every day. U will be able to gain/shed all extra weight gracefully and in a reasonable time span.

The best way to fast, in my humble opinion is to graduate down over a couple of days, then one day fast and graduate up over a couple of days.
Day 1. omit meats, nuts, grains,
Day 2. omit starches, and course vegetables
Day 3. fast
Day 4 add back fruits, veggies, tofu, rice, cereal etc.
Day 5 add back meats etc.
