I'm like 5'9" - 5'10" with a pretty fast metabolism...and I weigh about 140-145. Horrible. I'm trying to put on some weight and gain muscle but nothing seems to work - any suggestions? Should I start intaking mass amounts of food supplemented by working out? I'd like to be in the 160-165 range. Even 175 wouldn't be bad. Just look filled out but not fat. BTW I'm 19 and sophomore in college.

Don't take weight gaining powders until after you have seen a physician. These can really mess with your metabolism, and the best thing at your age is to establish healthy habits that you can continue until you are 55 / 65, not just a quick fix for the next month.

Instead, keep eating a healthy diet, and add a weightlifting routine (if you don't already). You should probably log your weight, sets, and reps for each move, probably see a trainer to figure out your starting points. If you do not see results, then gr..ad..ua..ll..y add weight or reps. Don't go too fast or you can risk injury.

Good luck, and don't worry about your weight too much. Your college will probably have a gym or rec center with personal trainers and/or dieticians who can personalize a program for you.

In order to gain weight, your caloric intake must be increased, and you'll need to eat meat and drink milk with your meals. drinking a lot of water will cause you to lose weight, or anyway, not to gain as much weight.
Still, you need to eat healthy and make sure you give your body what it needs to grow. A multi-vitamin might be a good idea, but if you're eating your veggies you really don't need that.
Finally, 145 for a 5'9, man isn't exactly skinny- depending on your body type it could be a very healthy weight to be.
At 19, you are naturally fit, to some extent. As you get older you will almost certainly fill out and gain weight (whether you want to or not)
So, for weight/muscle gain- eat meat, and eggs, drink whole milk, and work out on free weights- don't do aerobics, running, or work on a hydrafitness machine.

Eat nourishing food with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables being part of it. Chew each morsel at least 32 times. This will activate signal to the brain as soon as u have had enough. Besides this change in eating style, take regular light exercises and brisk walks every day. U will be able to gain/shed all extra weight gracefully and in a reasonable time span.
