I haven't seen any butterflies this year but I have noticed various plants and trees budding since last autumn. I would say it is definitely the warm weather. I wouldn't be surprised if we have lots and lots of bugs this summer as the winter will not have killed them off.

You can record and see observations for some key indicator species on the website below and see how natural seasonal indicators (frogspawn, snowdrops etc) vary from year to year. The study of natural timings is called Phenology (not to be confused with Phrenology - the study of bumps on the head!).

I live in the Midwest, USA. I stopped using pesticides on my property for the primary reason that they weren't working on the insects I wanted to destroy (chiggers and ants), and thus my yard, vegetable garden, and flower beds are mostly organic now. Since then, the number of beneficial insects has increased. This past summer, we saw an amazing number of butterflies, including a monarch butterfly that hung around all winter, along with many other interesting creatures (several species of praying mantis and dragonflies, toads, etc.)

Yeah, we're seeing a lot of them here in Colorado right now. January is the peak of our butterfly season. Damn things are everywhere.
