I have a large piece on my ribs.
It was the most painful tattoo I have, and if this is your first tattoo... you better brace yourself.
There really isn't anything you can take beforehand that is going to help you.
Do not drink alcohol, and do not take any kind of asprin. These things thin your blood and will make you bleed a lot worse. And that makes it harder for the tattoo artist to work.
Take some ibuprofen afterwards. It will help with the swelling.
If you know anyone who orders anything from Avon, I recommend their Intense Moisture Therapy lotion. It is amazing.
It's a very thick lotion that covers your tattoo well, and keeps it VERY moisturized. My tattoo artist was even surprised at how well it worked for mine. He was asking me what I used!
Mine took about 5 sessions, because I had different parts done at different times. Probably several hours if you put it all together.
The pain is pretty bad while you're getting it done, but afterwards it really doesn't hurt. It will wear you out, so you'll probably want to go home and take a nap. :)
Good luck!

Well, I don't have any tattoos but my sister has three and i sat with her through all of them. My best advice would be to not take anything before you go. You should not go alone, I would bring a friend or relative with you so that if you get dizzy you wont have to drive home and so that you can have someone to talk to keep your mind off the pain. What i have found to work the best to put on after is neosporin cream, apply liberally to the tattoo whenever you feel that you need it... it never hurts to put too much... as for the last two questions... it all depends on the person and the size of the tattoo!
that is all I can really say other than
GOOD LUCK and I hope that your tattoo comes out beautifully!

I once took a few Motrin before hand; I noticed no effect. Generally your body will produce endorphins and adrenaline and you won't feel much anyway. So now, I just go in, pain killer free and its never been bad. I usually just take something like Gatorade to drink in case I start to feel woozy and if you need to, ask for a break.
There is a general debate about what method of aftercare is best. Just take the advice of the tattoo artist and if you have concerns about something he or she says, ask. The main agreement is to avoid over use of lotions and creams. Generally putting too much of something on will ruin the tatto. Another huge agreement is let the tattoo air out and avoid the sun for a few weeks.
Depending on the tattoo, the pain will linger anywhere from a day to a week. Most of my tattoos weren't bad, but when I got on one my calf and knee, I couldn't walk right for a week and it was sore the whole time. Everyone and every body part is different.
As far as the time to complete it, some tattoos take 15-20 minutes, other might take 15-20 hours and several sessions. I'm sure if they told you two hours it will be fairly close to that.
Good luck and happy tattooing!

I would suggest to make sure you are really ready to get the tattoo, I always made sure I had a high protein meal before, having you body tattooed can cause mild shock to your system, after the tattooing eat something sweet like a snickers bar, to insure you have your sugar level or you could pass out.
Never use neosporin on your tattoo it will cause your ink to come out of your skin, that product is designed to remove infection and will ruin your art. Instead use A&D iontment.
Best of luck to you, the pain will be worth it.

i don't have a side tattoo, but do have 11 hours worth of work on my back alone.... which can also be a sensitive place to have tattooed. however there is alot more meat on the back than there is over the rib cage , so i would imagine it's not going to be comfortable. luckily for you, two hours is a relatively short amount of time to spend in the chair, so it will be over quickly. the feeling is actually very addictive, and once your endorphins start popping you'll be fine. good luck, and enjoy your new art.

A&D ointment and you only need a thin layer not to much because it has to breath to heal. Just don't let it get dry! Good luck and enjoy! Oh ps, don't take anything b/c if you do ur nerves will make you sick. I tried that. Jus take a can of surge with you to keep ur sugar up. that will keep you frm throwing up and fainting.

Try Midol, and congrats, and have fun with it, you will feel like a new person! =0)
(Most of my tattoos have taken more than 2 hours, and it hurts, but it's bearable.)
