See Dr ASAP or go to ER, it is always serious when blood is present in the cough. It may be a bronchial infection, or an pneumonia which can be treated with a potent Antibiotic. He will need some chest x rays and a diagnosis first, and may well be hospitalized for the treatment . Good to stay smoke free.

He has probably done a lot of damage to his lungs and an increase in coughing is normal after quitting. If he is coughing up a large amount of blood he should go to the doctor or if this persists. Occasionally coughing up a little blood is common after quitting. You should not rely on info from anyone, including me regarding this problem. To be safe, take him to the doctor. PS-maybe you can get my 29 yr old boyfriend to quit!
