The painting is of a large room with an archway leading to a corridor at the middle. The walls of the room are completely covered in framed artwork and there are some statues/artifacts around the room. There are also 2 large lamps in the room, one at the very left-hand side of the painting and one at the archway. Can anyone help - I desparately want a copy of it on my wall!

I think the artist you're looking for is Giovanni Paolo Pannini. I was looking at a couple of his works in The Louvre in October. Some of his pictures are very similar but I think the one you mean is Vedute di Roma Antica.

Here's a site where you can look and purchase a prints if you wish.

Try spending a bit of time browsing the Uffizi, Pitti Palace (both Firenze), Accademia (Venezia), Louvre (Paris), National (London) and The Royal Academy of Art (London) websites. You might come across it.

All I can suggest is that you call an art museum for advice, or go to the library and search art books. :(

Maybe start here, there are a number of "art expert" sites on-line. Good Luck
