Here are some themes I have done in the past.
50's theme : Martinis, pigs in a blanket, Elvis, Swing-Brian Setzer has some great cd's, Frank Sinatra is a must
Fiesta theme: Margaritas, tacos,Los Lobos, Calexico, El Vez
Tropical theme: Jerk Chicken, Seafood, key lime pie, Jimmy Buffett, Reggae
Wine and Cheese: You can never go wrong with jazz: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, etc.
Movie Night: Rum n' Coke, Beer, Pizza (preferably gourmet), popcorn, movie soundtracks: the best are Pulp Fiction, Saturday Night Fever
Have A Wonderful Time!

Hi

Themed cocktail parties:

Bond night - (get casino stuff out, everyone dresses up - serve martini's)
1980's - cheese and pinapple on sticks, big hair, cocktails with blue curucao and mini umbrellas
Roaring 20's - again, everyone dress up (flappers etc) 20's music, cocktails hire a butler.
Black and white - all costumes, food, drinks black and white
Pink party as above but pink and you can fund raise for Breast cancer awareness.

Email me if you want any more ideas.

Any music for your do tonight will do as long as its not hip hop, death metal or too loud!

As for music, you can't go wrong with trip hop (Tricky, Bjork, Morcheeba, Portishead, Massive Attack, etc.) It's low key and mellow. Dope basslines.

I would recommend having things to do (card games, charades, fondue, etc.)

Here's a game idea for people who don't know each other: Bizarre Truth

Pass out index cards and pencils. Each person writes his or her name at the top of the card and then writes four true items and one false item, in any order, on the card.

All pass their cards to the moderator, who reads the first card. After players discuss relative probabilities for the items, the moderator call for a vote.

There is no prize for fooling people, just the enjoyment of being the center of attention for a few minutes! Discussion is very lively, finding out the bizarre little truths about each other is fun, and characters are revealed in playing the game.

Oh I think since it's cocktails surely Sinatra, some jazz, and so forth. Maybe things might loosen up a bit later on but I think you'll want to start things off a bit classy. It IS cocktails, after all. Enjoy.

Play the type of music you listen to when chillin' simple as. Then when the sauce hits n ur hammered right out of ur own insanity, then you won't care youll prob put some 1940s crap on - no offence to those who like that!

I have had several "TIKI" style party's. Have tropical drinks-Caribbean music( Bob Marley, Jimmy Buffett style music )- guests can be greeted with tropical lays from around there neck like in Hawaii, Its very layed back and fun-casual beach attire

Start with some nice jazz, limited vocals at first--you want some noise, but don't want to inhibit conversation; move to more instrumental, but with a good tempo so that it sounds fun and gets the pace moving; the more people are talking, the less vocals you want on your sound track. As it is winding down, move to more mellow chill music so people relax as they leave. have fun!

Nice "elevator" music is good ... music with no words to compete with the chat that will be going on.

You might want to have some nibbles ... nuts, cheese, crackers, maybe some dips, chips....just stuff to help keep the guests semi-sober.

Leave some cd's out and let the guests decide, cos you wont be able to keep everyone happy and then at least when someone moans you can tell them you didnt put it on!
