In order to "master" the field, that implies a comprehensive understanding of the theory and applications in electronics, which means a through grounding in electricity and magnetism, solid state physics, and circuit theory, plus some quantum theory (for laser and xray applications). That is why EE curricula are so rigorous and take 5-6 years to get a "masters" degree.

If your aim is mastery of this discipline, I suggest that you list of required courses for the completion of the EE program in a respected university. Get the book lists for those courses, and read them, doing *all* the exercises. This is a superhuman undertaking for a hobbyist or amateur, as it requires a university-level knowledge of maths through calculus and differential equations. Such a course fo study for bright student working at it full time, with frequent exams, takes several years.

While mastery is laudable, I think that an overview is perhaps more reasonable and realistic. Ask yourself what it it that you want to know about electronics, and learn those in bite-sized pieces for your satisfaction. For example, I am an electric guitarist who loves vintage tube (valve) amplifiers. By reading and hands-on experience in modifying and building them, I have learned a siginificant amount about them. However, I in know way have 'mastered" the field.
