How come many dental nurses are women, and how come many dentists are men? For dental nurses what made you want to become a dental nurse rather than a dentist? Surely you can make more moneyas a dentist, so why didn't you choose that route? I don't want to be a dentist/dental nurse, but am just curious. As it appears to me that despite women being allowed to do jobs nowadays that they once were not allowed to do due to it being frowned upon for women to do jobs were regarded as men work, it appears that traditional gender roles are still rife in todays society. That is, we are still a long way off with regards to equal amounts of women doing jobs that were once male orientated.

Today there are more and more women becoming Dentist. I think a lot has to do with the role women play as a mother, caregiver, wife and the time and money involved in becoming a doctor has to play a part also. Most hygienist can get their license in 2 to 4 years college training. An assistant can get college training within a year or two, or on the job training as long as they can pass the National Certification test, and some states don't even require that. Traditionally the role of hygienist and assistant has been women, I think mainly because we are caregivers. We as women are consoling and comforting, something that all people need when seeing a dentist with a tooth ache. As for me, it was the money issue and family responsibilities. If I had pursued a career straight out of high school rather than marriage and family, it would have been towards a doctor’s degree in Dentistry. Society today still sees the role of dentist as a male for a lot of reasons. I think mainly because it's what we've all grown up with. It is great to see women taking on the doctor role though!
p.s. In my 40 years of dental work, I've never seen a male assistant, nor have I ever heard an assistant refer to herself as a dental nurse. Not sure of the ratio in India for doctor gender.

I think that men just see dental assisting and dental hygiene jobs as more feminine because that's the way they've been brought up to think. I'm sure that the demographics are probably changing over time as people's perceptions change and they become more open minded.
As far as dentists go, I'm in Dental School right now and my class is about 50/50 men and women. Once again, I think that the demographics of the profession are changing over time, and eventually you won't see such a disparity between men and women owning dental practices.

Might be you are just moving around with blinkers covering your vision.Who says that most dentists are men and women being Assistants? I study in a dental school in India where the strength is 70 girls:30 boys. What does that prove?
Widen your vision!!!There are female dentists everywhere.

Sex discrimination,I was a coal miner in uk for 35 years ,I thought it was a mans job..In came the sex discrimination Act,to my disgust may i add,and i found i was training women to be coal miners, and guess what some where extremely good, some were not as Strong as men but there was loads of jobs underground they could do.men could easily do a dental nurses job but most men would want alot more money for doing it.The dentist would not want to pay therefor that's where the problem lays

They are either dental assistants or dental hygienists....NOT dental nurses!! "Nurses" are medical. Anyway, you do see many women as dentists these days, but you are right, most dental assistants and hygienists are female. Don't know why.
