That's probably why your friend gave it to you.... it doesn't work.
How old is it? What brand is it? Did you check the manufacturer's website? Did you restart the computer? Did you plug it in yet? Did you install the software? Read the instructions... is it for a PC or MAC? Is it for Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000 or XP? What system do you have? Was it designed for your version of Windows?

You did not mentioned if you downloaded the soft ware already from the disk ? However,simply if scanner is not loaded in the system with CD,Just check the model number and name of company.Go to www.company name.com and download the soft ware.

Could be that the scanner is too old for your version of windows, could be the scanner is fried!

unplug the scanner cable if you pluged in, restart the computer. install the cd program and drive, restart the pc. plug in the scanner, let the computer install it self, after complate, restart it again.

Your question does not provide much to work with. What brand is it? Does it power up? Do you have the proper cables connecting it to your computer? Is the software/hardware compatible with your computer?
