I believe it is taken from the time in the wilderness when Moses was leading the Israelites. They were being bitten by snakes and they had to look at the copper image of the snake so they would not die.

Actually it is part of the many pagan symols that were adopted into the church back in the days of the nicene creed. When the emporer constantine of rome decided that to stop the riots that were beseging his city he would adopt the christian religion as a state religion and incorporate all the pagan relgions into it. It took a while for it to take effect properly but it was eventually enforced at sword point.

Other such symbols include the sun and moon symbols on the arch bishops robes, the arch bishops fish head hat, etc.

Christmas, easter, etc.

The list goes on. Sadly.

It also includes MARY being the 'mother of God' which is a direct adaptation of Semoramis (aka Diane of ephesus). She was considered to be the mother of a god. (who turned out to be a mass murderer and genocidal maniac)

I don't know. Moses made a snake and put it on a pole so people could look at it to stop the plague. Maybe this has something to do with it.
